The nordic team
Determined to locate subjects, no matter the challenge.
In the unforgiving winter landscapes, the Nordic Team stands as a beacon of hope. Their mission? Safety and effectiveness in search and rescue operations. These dedicated members brave rough topography, scaling snowy summits and deploying in minimal visibility conditions.

Operating in harsh conditions
While trying to locate a subject, they search for tracks, broken branches, patches of caved-in snow or signs that avalanches have passed through the area, and carry necessary equipment, like avalanche probes, snow shovels, extra warm clothes, headlamps and a GPS. The Nordic Team can sometimes search at night in storm conditions, so they must always track weather systems and pay careful attention to the search area’s snowpack.
Nevada County, California, experiences diverse winter conditions based on its elevation and geographical features.
Its terrain is distinctly characterized by two features: rolling foothills in the western third of the county and steep, exposed granite in the eastern two-thirds. With elevations spanning from 100 feet to over 9,000 feet, the county receives annual snowfall amounts ranging from less than 100 inches to over 500 inches.

What it takes…
Nordic Team members require a diverse skill set, strong phsysical fitness, and a dedication to helping those in need.
Once accepted to the team, training is continuous to ensure their readiness for the challenging mission in Nevada County’s rugged terrain.
