How do I qualify to be a volunteer? You must:
•  Be in reasonably good health
•  Have a valid California Drivers License
•  Be at least 18 years of age.

Requirements and expectations from the Sheriff:
•  Participation in ongoing training and search activities
•  Yearly standards established for participation
•  Complete a background investigation
•  Gain approval from the Board
Once approved and after completing certain initial training, an applicant becomes a “Trail Ready” member

About Basic Training

Basic training prepares you to be a “Mission Ready” memberTraining consists of approximately 80 hours and gives you thorough instructions on the following skills.

SAR Incident Response

Receive training on all the valueable skills relevant to performing the SAR mission. These include radio communications, ropes and knots, search tactics, crime scene preservation, man tracking, helicopter awareness, and interview skills.

Navigation

Learn how to navigate via map & compass, GPS, and CALTOPO.

CPR & Medical

Become certifed in CPR and Wilderness First Aid.​

Fitness

Increase your fitness level and meet the SAR standard.​

Basic Survival

Learn basic wilderness survival skills for varied weather conditions.

Training and Certifcation

Trail Ready” members must complete our NCSSAR Academy to obtain their basic training. On the last day of Academy members must successfully demonstrate the taught skills to an evaluator to become “Mission Ready” . Specific additional winter Search & Survival skills are taught during the winter months.
